"Benjamin gets a special bike from Ohio Kiwanians" - For children with special needs, riding a bike means so much more than enjoying summer days outside with friends. It also provides physical, emotional and social perks. Rebecca Graham has seen the benefits firsthand with her 4-year-old son, Benjamen.
Ohio Kiwanians donated two amtrykes at their Midyear Education Day in Columbus, OH on Saturday, March 5. One to four year old Benjamin and a second to an Army Veteran from southern Ohio David Sansom who was injured in the Iraq War. He remarked how thankful he was when we presented the tryke to him with his wife and 2 year old daughter. He loved hiking before his injury. He thanked us for giving him the tryke, helping him to gain mobility and to go back into nature, in his words, "saving his life."
Shown below is the presentation to Benjamin, age 4 with sister in red dress, parents and KI President Sue Petrisin and Ohio Governor Amy Zimmerman.

Midyear Education Day (flyer, pdf) - March 4, Crowne Plaza Columbus North, Columbus, OH
Congratulations to our Division 10E with the Official Host Clubs of Ohio District Kiwanis Midyear Education Day - March 4, 2017 at the Crowne Plaza Columbus North, Columbus, OH. Event info at ohiokiwanis.org
On March 4, 2017, the Granville Kiwanis Club and the Aktion Club of Licking County were the official host clubs of the 2017 Ohio District Kiwanis MidYear at the Crowne Plaza Columbus North hotel.
Mid-Year 2017 highlighted Literacy and our SLPs:
A district-wide service project in literacy was completed. Over 140 children’s books used as the table centerpieces were prepared for donation. Thanks to the initiative led by Governor Bill and First Lady Peggy Flinta, the books were labeled with the Ohio District Kiwanis First Family Project labels (available for purchase from the Ohio District Kiwanis office), then signed by clubs sitting at the tables and collected for distribution by the host clubs (Granville Kiwanis and the Aktion Club of Licking County). Everyone who attended Mid-Year (over 330 people!), participated in this project. Thanks to John O’Connor from Westerville Kiwanis Club for collecting and preparing the books.
Ohio District Circle K and Key Club members brought character (literally) to Mid-Year this year! They led some of the craft and SLP workshops and donated their time and service in support of the First Family’s Service Project “Today’s Readers – Tomorrow’s Leaders” by dressing up as children’s book characters. You may remember seeing The Cat in the Hat (Key Club Governor Prestin Minter) and an array of fuzzy costumed characters including Curious George and Mama and Papa Berenstain Bear. Your children and grandchildren will be jealous when you tell them you saw Martha Speaks (the dog that ate alphabet soup and could speak) or SkippyJon Jones. These costumes and others are available for any service project or school event. Contact costumespecialists.com based in Columbus, Ohio. Thanks to our costumier Circle K members Bethany Sara of Bowling Green State Univ, Jessica Holland of the Univ of Toledo, Molly Baumann of The Ohio State University, Abby Tyson, of Case Western Reserve University, Brynn Schaadt of Virginia Tech and Gov. Allyson Beechy of The Ohio State University!
Aktion Club Members participated in workshops, exhibited and hosted the opening session. Various clubs hosted an exhibit table and actively participated in the workshops and opening session. The Aktion Club of Licking County (chartered on Sept. 1, 2016) attended their first MidYear and were honored to be the official host club of the Opening Session. Congratulations to Thomas Olsen who rang the opening bell and Carl Gruber who led the Pledge of Allegiance.
Any qualifying club can claim an interclub with both the Aktion Club of Licking County and the Kiwanis Club of Granville. Granville Kiwanis was the official host of the lunch session. Thanks to Don Lewis, Sally Schaadt and Dave Thomas who rang the SHINY bell, led the pledge and gave the invocation.
New, hands-on Craft Workshops were a big hit! Thanks to Key Clubbers Prestin Minter, Kendra Asiedu, and Bethany Waleri, Circle K members Bryn Schaadt and Ally Beechy, and Kiwanians Sally Schaadt and Beth Riemenshneider who led these sessions. Aktion Club members and Kiwanians learned about projects they can complete with their clubs and SLPs for children and seniors. They also shared information about other projects, branding and tips to make your own marketing material and trifolds. The format encouraged fellowship while learning new crafts. A variety of crafts were completed. If you were unable to attend, then check out www.caitlins-smiles.org for craft kits for children in hospitals and Touching Little Lives www.touchinglittlelives.org for crafts to complete with seniors including quilting squares and patterns for clothes for babies.
Key Note Speaker Shary Williamson and the surprise Character Lunch were fun! Shary’s books bring to life her Woodland Elves. If you were too busy getting character selfies, you can learn more at her website http://thewoodlandelves.com Shary’s amazing level of energy and contagious joy to educate and entertain children drove people to her exhibit table where her illustrated books were a big hit!
The next ice cream social should include a contest for the biggest Build-your-own-sundae! There were some pretty hefty bowls and equally large smiles this year! Thanks to the ODKF and KIF for sponsoring this fun event. The Circle K raised money for their K.I.C.K. fund and 36 door prizes were announced!
24 Exhibitors included Half Price Books, the Reading Recovery Council at OSU, the Children’s Dyslexia Center, The Columbus Metropolitan Library Foundation, The Children’s Reading Foundation of Licking County, CASA of Franklin County; Shary Williamson The Woodland Elves, Stories by Nana (Diane Preston, Granville Kiwanis), Little Reading Libraries (Debbie Moore, New Albany Kiwanis), Book Bonanza (John O’Connor, Westerville Kiwanis), Emoji-Decorative Book Collection Bins (Alice Lewis, Granville Kiwanis), Aktion Club, Builder’s Club, Circle K International, K-Kids, Ohio Key Leader, Young Children Priority One, Eliminate-MNT Fulfillment, Ohio District Formula Team, Ohio District Kiwanis Foundation, Ohio District Kiwanis Foundation Golf Outing, On to International Convention (July, Paris) and District Convention (Aug, Dayton), and KI Corporate Partnerships. Thanks to our Partner DollarDays/the Kiwanis Warehouse for donating the blue folders. They contained more Information from these exhibitors, as well as a useful new member application, an SLP booklet, a notepad from Governor Bill, and a pen from ODKF.
Thank you for making this Mid-Year a fun-filled, furry success!
